The learning area Natural Sciences

The Natural Sciences offers us a particular way of understanding the world we live in, ranging from the study of how stars form to understanding how animals and plants live, and from the study of crystals to understand how the climate of the Earth is changing. The Learning Area has 3 Learning Outcomes and each learning outcome is divided into a number of sub-skills. Read more


The project: "Teaching Science to Large Classes"

This collaborative project, between the King’s College London (KCL), Peninsula Technikon and Western Cape Education Department aims to conduct professional developmental programmes for educators. Programmes to assist with developing teaching and learning strategies for teachers, developing research skills for lecturers and attending and co-presenting at conferences for curriculum advisors and planners. Resources

Sally Johnson and Dr. Martin Monk from KCL have developed over the years a large number of Translation Activities with teachers` notes for the four themes/strands of the Learning Area: Natural Sciences, which are suitable for implementing C2005 and the RNCS. These worksheets encourage learners to use scientific skills and processes to transform data from one form to another, hence they have been named ‘Translation Activities.’ They are available in English and Afrikaans for downloading in Word or PowerPoint file form. Assessment workshops

The project "Teaching Science to large Classes" has initiated and conducted a series of workshops on assessment. Christine Harrison, Sally Johnson and Martin Monk from KCL with staff from Pentech and WCED facilitated these workshops. Read more


Revised Curriculum Statement (RNCS)

The revised Curriculum for GET is available and will be implemented in phases. RNCS will be implemented next year (2004) in the Foundation Phase (Grades R-3), in 2005 in Intermediate Phase, and in 2006 in Grade 7, in 2007 in Grade 8 and in 2008 in Grade 9. Read more
