Baseline assessment for grade 1: do you have a contribution?

During the 4th term 2007, Grade 1 teachers, heads of department, LSTs and principals were invited to participate in an afternoon workshop on the revised Western Cape Education Department (WCED) Grade 1 Baseline Assessment programme. This programme is an exemplar to assist schools “to determine what learners already know” when they start their Grade 1 year. The assessment programme can be done over 10 to 20 days, depending on context, and it provides a basis for differentiated lessons.

The voluntary workshops provided these professionals an opportunity to engage with the revised material, share experiences from 2007 implementation, and start thinking about choices for 2008.

Implementation of the Baseline Assessment is necessary to support the Literacy Numeracy Strategy: a provincial strategy to improve literacy and numeracy levels in learners.

An exemplar Baseline Assessment programme for Grades 2 and 3 will also be developed.

Schools with ideas or examples are welcome to send them to Gillian van Wyk, senior planner responsible for the Foundation Phase, for consideration.
